Dr. Tom Cheezum


Dr. Tom Cheezum is one of the original members, and a member of the advisory board, of the Hampton Roads Writers. He joined the Hampton Roads Writers to help decrease the rate of illiteracy through early detection of visual problems which may interfere with the reading and learning skills of an individual.

He helps promote the visual welfare of young children, for the early detection of vision problems which may affect learning, through his participation in the InfantSee program of the American Optometric Association. InfantSee provides eye health and vision screenings for children between the ages of six months and one year at no charge to the parents.

He is an optometrist who has practiced in Chesapeake, Virginia, for 30 years. His practice provides family eye and vision care.

Dr. Cheezum was a member of the Virginia Board of Optometry for eight years and strived to protect the visual health and welfare of the citizens of Virginia during his tenure on the Board. He has also been a member of the Virginia Optometric Association and the American Optometric Association for thirty years and has chaired several continuing education and fund raising programs for the state optometric association. He is the recipient of the Virginia Optometrist of the Year and the Distinguished Achievement Award which were presented to him by the Virginia Optometric Association in recognition of his efforts to promote professional eye care and the visual welfare of the public.
