Richard was born in a coal mining camp in Eastern Kentucky. At the end of the Second World War his family moved to a tobacco farm in central Kentucky. During this time, because his help was needed to feed the family, his formal education came to an end. In 1950 he fought in the Korean War. He remained in the service, and served two tours in the Vietnam War. He retired from the service in 1970 and was self employed for ten years. He worked as a mechanic on construction equipment for a few years. After he retired from the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation, he decided to write.
