Have you looked into the sky at night and seen anything unusual? The times I've crossed the desert in the middle of the night between Phoenix and Las Vegas, all alone, I've never seen anything unusual or threatening. And it's extremely dark out there. The only lights are from my car. Not another vehicle in sight. I keep hoping to see something weird in the sky, but it never happens. The same is true for my day trips between those two cities. So where are all the UFOs hanging out? And how come other people see them, but not me? You'd think the desert would be the perfect place for them to hang around.
The sky may also be populated by flying dinosaurs. You just have to be in the right place to see them.
What is the thing your character sees in the sky? A flock of geese? Icarus, from Greek mythodogy who has finally perfected his man-made wings and has taken flight? Winged Pegasus? Or perhaps a tornado forming?
Maybe you want to do the opposite and write about something odd your character sees on the ground. Or maybe it's something beautiful. On the other hand, it could be something deadly.
Try to write a completely plotted story in 500 words or less. Makey sure it has a clear beginning, middle, and end. If you can't create a complete story, try a vignette of at least 200 words.
