Here is the LAST paragraph of a short story:

She got in the car and I watched the red taillights move around a corner. A dozen things went through my mind that I wished I'd said. I headed for a motel and stopped at a bridge that crossed the Potomac River. Snow thick in the air, I parked, got out of the car, and just stared. My family has been in the hills for two hundred years and I was the first to leave. Now I was pretty much ruined for going back. The black water ran fast and cold below. I started walking.
